Leadsucker - Burn (2013) - Hyper-aggressive Hardcore Punk

0 ratings

Overly-aggressive and not for the faint-of-heart, Leadsucker's debut album pummels the listener across thirty tracks of unrelenting hardcore punk that has been hailed as "a musical call to arms."

The music is not catchy, with most riffs disappearing before they even have time to register, while the vocal delivery can best be described as an off-kilter combination of screaming and rapping.  So then, you may ask, why even bother?

The strength of "Burn" is its timeliness, or sadly in its worst-case scenario, its though released in 2013, many of the album's themes have since jumped into public conscience, with hard-hitting topics like racism, rape culture, and police brutality all explored with a raw, take-no-prisoners attitude. While these topics are certainly nothing new, Leadsucker deals with them in an alarmingly matter-of-fact way, with lyrics that "cut with such razor sharp poignancy and heartfelt honesty that the music started to make my stomach turn."

It's no surprise then, that it was created by guitarist/vocalist PJ Hearn, a pseudonymous former government employee who became the target of a smear campaign after alerting his superiors to waste and mismanagement within his department.  After being denied several transfer requests, and dealing with verbal abuse and threats from his co-workers, he decided to quit, eventually using his rage as a launching point for a band.  He enlisted the help of drummer Sam Terrace and bassist Austin Welch, and Leadsucker was formed.

"Leadsucker has created an album that is hard-hitting, sharp and to the point: delivering a string of powerful messages in a short amount of time."
